The tournament website is up, registration open and activities already underway in preparation for the 2012 AFC adidas Summer Classic. “Teams have already started registering at a records pace” reported Tournament Director Dom Falcinelli. “We’re very excited about this event and anticipate this being the largest tournament we’ve ever hosted.” Falcinelli has good reason to feel optimistic about this spring’s tournament. Last falls AFC Fall Challenge had 225 teams come out to play, which was nearly double the amount of teams from the previous record.
The Aces Futbol Club has earned the reputation throughout club soccer for hosting some of the most well run tournaments in North Texas and the other clubs are taking notice. “Providing a well organized tournament with very few glitches, evenly matched brackets with great competition and making it all happen in 36 hours is a work of art. The Tournament Director is responsible for 225+ teams and over 1,000 games he needs to get scheduled, so it’s no simple task. Being familiar with the various leagues, each divisions and the teams is a critical aspect of being a great tournament director.” said AFC Director Brian Apt.
Another essential aspect of the AFC Tournaments is the volunteer roles. Without the parents and siblings that volunteer to help with registration check-in, field marshal and setup and cleanup, we would never get everything done. Though it may seem like a pain to volunteer 3 hours over tournament weekend, it’s a critical piece of hosting a successful tournament. Please be sure a visit the Dibs page at the top of the AFC website and signup for your volunteer position.
AFC has announced the hiring of John Hedlund as the new Head Coach of the AFC 97 Girls Black, effective May 1, 2012.
“We are really excited to have John join the Club,” said Club Director Brian Apt. “Not only has John been an important part of the University of North Texas Women’s Soccer program for many years, he also brings a wealth of club soccer and management experience and a ton of passion for the game. We are a club that went from 6 teams, 4 short years ago, to 30 teams today. This last year has been the starting point to a big change in how we run the club and bringing in top quality coaches and staff is something we are committed to. AFC wants to get to that next level and become a more competitive club and along with our great staff, John will help us continue with our mission to turn AFC into something very special.” Last year AFC added two teams to Lake Highlands and had a third promoted up from Division III to DII and look to do it again in 2012 with their new 01 team. Clearly adding quality and highly regarded coaches like John and other coaches with equally impressive backgrounds only helps AFC obtain their club goals of being a top club in North Texas. They realize that it does not happen over night though.
Having established himself as one of the most prominent coaches in the Central Region, John Hedlund, who is in his 18th year as Head Coach of the University of North Texas Women's Soccer Program, has molded the soccer program into one of the nation’s elite.
Hedlund has had a winning season all 17 years he has been at North Texas. In 2011, Hedlund led the Mean Green to its sixth overall conference championship trophy and fourth regular season title. North Texas beat Denver 1-0 on the last day of the season to clinch the Sun Belt title. Hedlund was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year for the Mean Green's 8-1-1 conference season.
Hedlund concluded a 12-year professional playing career, in which he played defender for the United States Men's Olympic qualifying team (1983-84), the New York Express (1984-85), the Dallas Sidekicks (1986-87 and 1992-95) and the Dallas Rockets (1988-91).
In the outdoor game, Hedlund played with the Richardson Rockets, who won the 1991 SISL Championship and reached the 1991 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final. Hedlund helped the Rockets reach the fourth round of the 1992 CONCACAF Champions Cup, before falling in the Fourth Round to Club America in Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. He played with the United States Olympic team under Manfred Schellscheidt in the lead up to the 1984 Summer Olympics, but missed the Olympic Tournament due to injury. With the United States, Hedlund played tournaments in South Korea, Sweden, Finland and Malaysia.
A four-year letterwinner at Midwestern State University, Hedlund was twice voted to the NAIA All-America team in college.
John has also coached club teams for Soar and the Dallas Texans and the club is very excited to have John joining the team.
AFC is pleased to announce a new agreement with Crossroads Bible Church that provides AFC with a new full size practice field in Double Oak. Located directly across FM 407 from the Chinn Chapel Soccer Complex, the new location is easily accessible and provides much needed practice space and flexibility. The new field will be fully equipped with regulation goals, corner flags and lined for game play. The club will have full access to the field Monday – Thursday and on Saturday mornings, which provides the club with the perfect field for friendly matches.
Preparations are already under way to get the field ready for a weekly practice schedule within the next 4-6 weeks. The new field will greatly assist in easing the field crowding issue we have experienced and provide our teams with the required space they need to run practices. AFC is very excited about this new partnership and look forward to providing you with updates over the next several weeks.
